August Board Briefs

The Village of West Salem’s Board met on Monday, August 26, 2024 at 7:00 PM. Highlights from the meeting include:

Announcements, Reports, and Discussion:

  • Mayor Jefrey Bradham thanked Edwards County Engineer Dustin Bunting for his work on the Lancaster Road project in West Salem.
  • The West Salem Chowder was held on August 17th and was a great success. The Mayor thanked the Chowder Committee, the West Salem Development Association, the Utility Department, and the many volunteers who worked on this event.   
  • Courtesy Candidate Packets for the April 1, 2025 Consolidated Election are available at Village Hall. Completed candidate packets can be filed at Village Hall between November 12th and November 18th.
  • The Board discussed requiring building permits for new construction to ensure that fences and other structures are not being built on top of utility easements. You can read a copy of the draft Ordinance being discussed here.
  • The bid opening for construction work on the Mill Pond Park project is tentatively scheduled for September 18, 2024 at Village Hall.  
  • The Village is working towards offering direct debit, commonly called ‘auto pay’, as a payment option for utility bills.
  • The Board discussed the possibility of changing the meeting time of Village Board Meetings to 6:30 PM year-round. Currently Village Board meetings begin at 7:00 PM during the summer, and 6:30 PM during the winter.
  •  Jeff Vaughn from Greater Wabash Regional Planning Commission discussed a DECO grant program that could assist the Village with funding water line replacements.

Village Board Action:

  • The Board approved the Annual Audit which was completed by Kemper CPA Group. The Audit is posted on the Village’s Website here.
  • The Board approved Ordinance 2024-11; An Ordinance for the Sale of Municipal Personal Property. The Village will be selling a 1985 Mack MS300 Fire Truck through an online auction at Govdeals.com. View the Ordinance here
  • The Board approved using Tax Increment Financing (TIF) funds for the demolition of two properties, and for the replacement of the roof on the Community Shelter House.

The next regularly scheduled Village Board Meeting will be Monday, September 23, 2024 at 7:00 PM. The Board meets at Village Hall which is located at 106 E. South Street, West Salem, IL.
