Freedom Festival

This annual multi-day festival celebrates our Nation’s Independence. It features food trucks, live music, vendors, games, and some of the best fireworks in the area.
West Salem Chowder
Park on the Square, 100 South Street, West Salem
‘Chowders’ are a Southern Illinois tradition. On the third Saturday in August, 375 gallons of chowder are prepared in eight huge kettles on the Square. A variety of activities and contests are always planned for the day making this a popular community wide event.
Trunk of Treating

This annual event held the last week of October features a costume contest, and prizes for the best decorated vehicle.
Tree Lighting on the Square

Held the Saturday after Thanksgiving. An annual countdown to the lighting of Christmas trees decorated by local community groups and residents. Area churches form a joint choir to sings carols. Hot chocolate, homemade cookies, and maybe even an appearance of a special visitor from the North Pole make this a great event to start the holiday season.
