Storm drains are designed to carry rainwater, not yard waste. Yard clippings and fallen leaves, if not properly disposed, can accumulate in drainage systems and clog sewer pipes. Clogged pipes cause storm drains to overflow, leading to streets and/or yards flooding. Accumulated yard waste in drainage systems can cause pollution of our waterways and increase maintenance costs with only a moderate amount of rain.
Residents play an important role in keeping the stormwater system functioning properly.
You can help by:
- Keeping leaves and grass clippings out of streets and storm drains.
- Never dumping oil, paint, chemicals, or household waste into storm drains.
- Picking up pet waste.
- Properly disposing of yard waste.
- Reporting blocked catch basins or damaged stormwater infrastructure.
- Keeping drainage easements free of obstructions.
- Never blow or sweep leaves, grass clippings, or other yard waste onto the street, sidewalk, or storm drains.
