West Salem residents may have heard a siren at noon today. Fire Chief Harvey Fenton announced at the September Village Board Meeting that a new fire siren has been installed behind Village Hall. The siren will be tested each day at noon.
The Village of West Salem is protected by a volunteer fire department. The fire siren is just one method the department uses to contact the volunteers as quickly as possible in the event of an emergency. In addition to the fire siren, the department utilizes cell phones and pagers. If the siren sounds once, it means there is a fire in town. If the siren sounds twice, it means there is a fire outside of town.
In the event of an emergency, West Salem residents should dial 911 from any phone to reach emergency services.
