The Village of West Salem’s Board met at Village Hall on September 22, 2025 at 6:30 PM. Highlights from the meeting include:
- The West Salem Senior Center will be closing on September 30, 2025. The Edwards County Council on Aging (ECCOA) Board voted in July to close the West Salem Center. Efforts to reverse this decision were unsuccessful. The ECCOA Board President Doug Raber informed the West Salem Village Board that the closure was approved by the Southeastern Illinois Agency on Aging, and the Illinois Department of Aging. The Albion Senior Center will be remaining open. West Salem residents may contact the Edwards County Council on Aging at 618-445-2017 for more information.
- Mayor Jeff Bradham thanked everyone who has helped with the installation of the new ‘Welcome to West Salem’ sign. The installation is very near completion. A dedication is being planned for October.
- A Bulk Trash Pick-up has been scheduled for Thursday, October 16, 2025. Residents are asked that all materials be placed in weather proof containers (plastic bags). Mattresses need to wrapped in plastic.
- The West Salem Costume Contest / Trunk-or-Treat Event is scheduled for Friday, October 31, 2025. This event is sponsored by The Friends of the West Salem Public Library and the Volunteer Firemen’s Association of West Salem. The event will be on the Village Square in West Salem (100 South Street, West Salem, IL) from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
- Trick-or-Treat Hours for the Village of West Salem will be from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Friday, October 31, 2025. Residents who wish to hand out treats may turn on their front porch light to indicate that they welcome trick-or-treaters.
- The Board heard insurance presentations from Blank’s Insurance, and from the Illinois Municipal League Risk Management Association. The Board will review the written proposals and plan to meet at a later date to make a decision.
- The Board adopted an Ordinance authorizing the Bonds for the purchase of a new Fire Truck. The successful Referendum was held last April; the truck is expected to be delivered in early January.
- The Board approved Treasurer Ameilia Quillen to attend the Illinois Municipal Treasurers Association Institute in November. Treasurer Quillen is working towards becoming a Certified Illinois Municipal Treasurer, attendance is required to earn this professional certification.
